Double Chin Surgery: What You Need to Know

People with double chins that they can’t get rid of no matter what they do can opt for liposuction. This procedure, with some modifications, is also used to remove unwanted, stubborn fat from the abdomen, the thighs and the buttocks.

Liposuction is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that achieves significant and permanent results in people who are good candidates for the procedure.

Who is a Candidate for Chin Liposuction?

A good candidate for chin liposuction or its variations should be in good health overall but have areas of unwanted fat around their chin, jawline, or neck that won’t go away even with a healthy diet and exercise routine. However, to ensure you have no medical contraindications that would make you ineligible for this procedure, Dr. Giancarlo Zuliani will need to have a consultation with you to determine if you’re a good candidate for liposuction.

Questions to Ask During Facial Liposuction Consultation

Dr. Zuliani expects patients to ask questions during a consultation and is ready and able to answer them. Some common questions include:

  • How long it will take to recover from the operation?
  • What sort of final results can I expect?
  • Do I have a higher risk for some complications based on my medical history?
  • When should I call Dr. Zuliani if I experience complications?

Before surgery, patients should arrange for someone to bring them to and from the doctor’s office, buy medications in advance, and prepare their home for their recovery. This can include cooking meals beforehand and putting them in the freezer.

How Chin and Neck Liposuction Works

All liposuction procedures follow the same general steps and use a cannula, which is a thin, hollow tube, to vacuum out fat from the treatment area.

Chin Liposuction Steps

Before chin liposuction, Dr. Zuliani examines the patient’s neck and chin and marks the areas where the cannula will be inserted. He then uses a solution to clean the area then injects an analgesic to numb it.

When the patient is comfortably numb, the doctor makes tiny incisions where he marked that are just big enough for the cannula. The doctor inserts the cannula and makes gentle fanning motions in the chin to remove enough fat to give the patient a smoother and more aesthetically pleasing look. After that, the doctor bandages the area and may apply a chin strap.

Face and Neck Surgery

Chin and neck liposuction may be performed as part of a more intense procedure, like a neck lift. A neck lift goes beyond liposuction to not only remove excess fat, but also correct the look of the neck by removing skin or reshaping tissue. Instead of simply injecting an anesthetic, he’ll give the patient IV sedation or even general anesthesia. The area is then cleaned, and while the patient is asleep the doctor makes incisions around their hairline and behind their ears. This keeps any scars from being noticeable. After that, he’ll take away unwanted fat and skin and may tighten the muscles of the neck and/or lower face to give the area a more youthful appearance.

When this procedure is done, the incisions are closed and patients are released to their caregiver. Whereas chin liposuction may take only a few days of recovery, chin and neck surgery can take up to two weeks.
