What is Dimpleplasty?

Not everyone has dimples naturally, but many people desire dimples for aesthetic reasons.  A dimpleplasty is a surgical procedure that creates dimples where none formerly existed or were lost due to the aging process.

Anatomy of a Dimple

A dimple results from skin tissue being attached to the underlying muscles in a specific way. When the muscles flex during a smile, most of the skin moves, but not all of it, creating a dimple.   Some people have dimples and others do not. Dimples occur with people who are born with tight skin connections and facial muscles. They can fade due to aging, as skin becomes more lax and less likely to bunch up on itself. However, for people looking to increase their youthful look, a dimpleplasty is a quick, easy way to create dimples or emphasize existing ones.

Dimpleplasty Procedure

The number of individuals seeking and receiving dimpleplasty surgery has risen significantly during the last few years. This is because of the procedure’s simplicity, lasting effects, and effectiveness at restoring “cuteness” to a person’s smile without deeply invasive surgery.

Dimpleplasty is an outpatient procedure. It takes place in our Bloomfield Hills office and is usually performed with a simple, local anesthetic.  To determine if you’re a good candidate for a dimpleplasty, we recommend scheduling a surgical consultation with Dr. Zuliani.  Once deemed a candidate, Dr. Zuliani’s Patient Care Coordinator will get you scheduled for your procedure.

During the procedure itself, Dr. Zuliani will mark the area where the dimple will be created, and then inject a local anesthetic for added comfort.   After the anesthetic takes effect, usually in about 10 minutes, Dr. Zuliani will make a small incision inside the mouth. This is to create scar tissue in the cheek that will fuse the skin to the muscle tissue. This incision is sealed with a dissolvable suture that will fade away in six to 12 months.

The procedure itself only takes around 30-60 minutes to perform, with results evident immediately after treatment, although more natural results may take several weeks to appear.

Recovering from Dimpleplasty

Since dimpleplasty is a minimally invasive, outpatient procedure, recovery is a relatively easy process. Patients usually go home as soon as the procedure is completed. Dimpleplasty patients experience some mild inflammation and discomfort in the incision area for a few days after the surgery. Applying cold packs, taking over-the-counter pain medications and rest will help with any discomfort.

Any bruising or swelling usually goes away within a week of surgery. Most patients can go back to their daily routines within a couple of days, however Dr. Zuliani recommends avoiding strenuous activity for at least a week. A follow-up appointment is scheduled a week post-procedure to evaluate the results and address any concerns you may have.

At first, your dimples will be visible at all times. This effect will fade with time, and the dimples will become less pronounced and more natural-looking.
