Correction for a Deviated Septum

The septum of your nose is that bridge of skin, cartilage, and tissue that divides your nostrils. A deviated septum refers to an imbalance of the septum being moved toward one side of the nose. Dr. Zuliani can correct a deviated septum by performing a septoplasty procedure.

“I’m also completely satisfied with the results and my ability to breathe and smell! It really has been life changing. If you’re in the Michigan area, or are willing to travel for a perfect surgeon, I highly suggest seeing Dr. Z.” – Patient

A septoplasty helps to straighten the septum, creating a more well-balanced division of the nostrils. This also allows for improved airflow through the nose.

Who might benefit from a septoplasty?

Dr. Zuliani recommends the septoplasty procedure to men and women with a deviated septum. In addition to a straightened septum and more attractive balance between nostrils, this functional nasal surgery often provides benefits such as improved airflow and breathing.

How is a septoplasty performed?

Your septoplasty will be performed under local or general anesthesia. Dr. Zuliani will perform this treatment onsite at Zuliani Facial Aesthetics in Bloomfield Hills or at an accredited surgery center. This procedure typically takes about 90 minutes to complete.

To correct the deviated septum, Dr. Zuliani will make a small incision on either side of your nose to access the septum. Carefully lifting the mucous membrane, he will then straighten the septum to create a symmetrical division of the nose.

Once your procedure is complete, stitches may be used to secure the membrane and septum in place. Your nose will also be packed with absorbable foam to help control any post-surgical bleeding.

What can be expected after a septoplasty?

Each patient will experience recovery after septoplasty a bit differently. Following you septoplasty, your nose will be swollen and may be a bit painful. Dr. Zuliani will prescribe any necessary pain medications to assist with the healing process. However, you should avoid any blood-thinners such as ibuprofen and aspirin. Swelling should fade soon after your procedure, and you will notice gradual improvements in your breathing.
